Vice-Admiral Art McDonald will be named Canada’s chief of the defence staff, CBC has learned.

McDonald has served as the chief of the naval staff and commander of the Royal Canadian Navy since June 2019.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. ET news conference.

McDonald would replace Gen. Jonathan Vance, who announced in July that he would retire by the end of the year.
